How to Install Kitchen Cabinets

installation of kitchen cabinets

You have two choices when it comes to remodeling your kitchen. One, you can do it yourself or hire a professional. However, if you're not handy, you may end up spending more money than you should on the remodel than you planned. Kitchen cabinets are an investment in your home, so it is important to do it correctly.

Installation of base cabinets

The process of installing new base cabinets for kitchen cabinets does not require you to hire a professional, but you will need basic carpentry skills to do the job right. Start by making sure that the cabinets are level. If they aren't level or plumb, the cabinets won't close securely and may not fit the appliances that you want to install. At least one person will be needed to lift and hold your cabinets in place.

Once you've decided on the layout for the base cabinets you can proceed to installing the upper cabinets. The height of the upper cabinets should not exceed 36 inches from the ground. The height of the base cabinets must not be lower than 24 inches above the countertop. Use a stud locater to mark each stud on the wall.

Installing side-by-side cabinets

Planning and preparation are necessary when installing side-byside cabinets in the Kitchen. Measure and mark out the layout of your new cabinets. You can use the old cabinets as guides or seek out a design center template to create a plan that fits the area.

Next, you should align the face frames of both cabinets. Secure them with C-clamps. Once the cabinets are in position, attach the next unit by using #8 2 1/2-inch screws. To achieve an even look, ensure that you countersunk all screws.

Install drawer fronts

Before installing new drawer faces, you need to remove the screws that held the old drawer fronts to the drawerbox. The edges of the front panel can be cut with a handsaw so it aligns with the drawer box. Next, install screws into the holes, starting with the top hinge plate. Make sure the screws are the right size.

If you have separate drawer fronts for your cabinet, you can only install one of them at a time while keeping the other attached. To attach the front to your drawer box, you will need hardware. This makes it easier to replace your front.

Level checking

When installing kitchen cabinets, check that the cabinet face is level with the wall and the reference line. Use shims to align the cabinet with the wall or at stud locations. After leveling the cabinet using two 1/2 inch deck screws and washers, secure it in place.

You can check the level by using a level to measure the height of the wall and the base cabinets. To determine the height of the cabinet wall, you can also use a 2-foot-high level.

Self-drilling screws

You must ensure that self-drilling kitchen cabinets are installed using the correct size screws. Before you begin, measure the length and width of the openings on the face frames and wall panels. Filler strips can be added where necessary. You can add filler strips where necessary.

When using self-drilling screws, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. The screws are typically only two-1/2" long, which means that you can embed up to one-1/2 inches of fastener into each wall panel. Brown-coated screws can also be purchased that blend with the cabinets' colors. You should ensure that the screws are driven into the cabinet rails until they touch the rail. The screws will then become a stud in your wall and bite into the wooden rail.

Using permanent blocks

For smooth and level kitchen cabinets, it is important to consider where the block is going to be located. Although the exact placement of the block will depend on the cabinet type, there are general guidelines that can be applied to all situations. Base cabinets must have the top of block at the top and the bottom at the bottom.

Start by measuring how high and where the cabinet is located on the wall. You will then drill holes into the cabinet about 1" apart from the corners. Once the holes have been drilled, you will need to use a socket and a wrench to drive in the screws to the inserts.

FAQ

Is it better for a contractor to hire or a subcontractor to do the job?

Hiring a general contract is typically more costly than hiring subcontractors. A general contractor has many employees, so they often charge their clients a lot of money for labor costs. A subcontractor, on the other hand, only hires one worker, and charges less per hour.

How To

How much money should I spend restoring my old house?

The cost of renovating your home depends on how many rooms you want to update, what kind of renovations you plan to do, where you live, and whether you're doing it yourself or hiring professionals. Depending upon the size of the renovation, the average cost ranges between $10,000 and $50,000.

You'll probably get less than the market value of your home if you don’t include the cost of repairs, upgrades and other improvements. If you do not put in enough effort to make your home attractive before selling, you might lose money. If you put enough effort into making your home look great, it will increase the price you receive when you sell it.

These are some factors that will help you determine which projects you should start:

  • Your budget. If you have a limited budget, start small. Start small. For instance, you could tackle one room at once, such as replacing flooring or painting walls. To make big changes, you can hire a contractor who is skilled in kitchen remodeling.
  • Priorities. You decide what you are going to do with your home. Even if you focus on one issue, it is important to remember that even minor problems can quickly grow. If your roof leaks when it rains, it might be necessary to have it replaced sooner than you think.
  • Your timeline. Your timeline. If you are looking to purchase a new home next year, for example, you might not want to replace your bathroom fixtures or install hardwood floors right away. To make these upgrades, it might be a good idea to wait until you leave your home.
  • Your skills. If you lack certain skills needed to perform a given project, find someone else to handle them. For example, if your carpentry skills aren't strong enough to build custom cabinets, you might be able to hire a cabinet maker to do the job.
